Fr. Kent Hemberger

 

Father Kent Hemberger

Fr. Kent is a diocesan priest who currently serves as the director of the Spiritual Life Center. After growing up on a family farm near Conway Springs, he attended Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas and studied at the Pontifical College Josephinum earning M. Div. and M.A. degrees before being ordained in 1988. Father Kent served three years as associate pastor at St. Mary’s Cathedral and 16 years as pastor of St. Anne’s Parish in Wichita.  Just prior to his appointment as Director of the Center, Father participated in a nine-month program of training in spiritual direction and Ignatian spirituality at Loyola House in Guelph, Canada.  He began his tenure at the Spiritual Life Center in July of 2008.

Mrs. Mary Mertes

 

 

 

Mrs. Mary Mertes
Mary has been serving as a spiritual guide at the Center since 2002. She and her husband, John, have been married for 47 years and are parents to nine children and 31 grandchildren. Mary and John have been involved in counseling for married couples since 1970. They currently work in our diocesan Retrouvaille retreat program for couples experiencing difficulties in their marriage. Mary studied at the Pecos School of Spiritual Direction in New Mexico. Her witness to the vocation of marriage and family life is edifying to all who know her.
   

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sr. Marie Veronica Janousek, C.S.J.

Sister Marie Veronica Janousek, CSJ has experienced six diversified professional careers serving in the ministry of healthcare within Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, New York and California.  The past few years she served on the executive level in the capacity of Vice President of Mission Integration for the Via Christi Health System and the VC Regional Medical Center.   Her varied ministry careers were in the areas of nursing education, supervision, management, administration, employee assistance and pastoral ministry. Presently, Sister works part time as a Chaplain within VCRMC St. Francis and St. Joseph Campuses and also serves as a Spiritual Guide at the Spiritual Life Center.    She is Nationally Certified as a Chaplain with the National Association of Catholic Chaplains and the National Association of Professional Chaplains (Protestant organization).  Sister is discerning a new ministry opportunity and currently in training in the three year Ecumenical Souljourners Formation Program for Spiritual Directors offered through the Benedictine Sophia Retreat Center in Atchinson, Kansas.  She is a convert to the Catholic faith prior to her entering the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita.

   

 

 

Mr. Ivan Lange

Ivan is an experienced spiritual guide. Ivan and his wife of 46 years, Beverly, are blessed with 10 children and 18 grandchildren. He has served as a spiritual companion to a number of individuals in past years. Ivan studied at the Pecos School of Spiritual Direction in New Mexico. He recently completed service as one of the co-directors of the Associate Program of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, USA Province. Ivan is well versed in the Cursillo retreat and in 12-Step spirituality.

   

 

 

Sr. Joan Marie Burger, C.S.J.
Sr. Joan is a Sister of St. Joseph of Wichita and works in the area of Spirituality (Retreat Work and Spiritual Direction).  Since 1992, she has served in this capacity for men’s and women’s Cursillo retreats in the Diocese of Wichita and Salina, Kansas. Sr. Joan earned her Master’s Degree in Spirituality from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sister is currently on sabbatical and will resume spiritual direction work in January.
   
Deb Richards
Deb Richards

Deb Richards is a lay counselor, Scripture study leader and writer for Canticle magazine.  She has been involved in spiritual direction since 1986, and has recently completed training in the School for Spiritual Direction in Pecos, New Mexico. Deb and her husband, Jack, are members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish.  Their four grown children live in Illinois.

   

Marcelline Arnold

Marcelline Arnold

Marcelline Arnold has been a teacher for 37 years, most of those years here in the Wichita Diocese. She has earned a Master Catechist Certificate from the Diocese of Wichita and is a certified facilitator for the Becoming a Love and Logic Parent Series.  When Bishop Gerber asked the SLC to develop a program for Spiritual Companionship, Marcelline was in the first series, ending in 1998.
