The Tabernacle and Capstone

“You form a building which rises on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ himself as the Capstone. Through Him, the whole structure is fitted together and takes place as a holy temple…to become a dwelling place for God in the Spirit.”

--Ephesians 2: 20-22

The Blessed Sacrament Chapel of the Spiritual Life Center features the Tabernacle of the Holy Eucharist resting atop the Capstone, a 300-million-year-old sandstone boulder taken from the geographical center of the Diocese of Wichita. Blessed by Bishop Eugene J. Gerber in February of 1989 as construction of the Spiritual Life Center began, the Capstone and Tabernacle is the symbolic foundation of the Center, since the Eucharist is the “source and summit” of our faith.

Aged and beautiful, the Capstone reminds us of the debt we owe to those who come before us. It reminds us of the challenges we face in the future. It reminds us that, with Christ as our foundation, we will surely meet those challenges.
