Descriptions of Events

RETREATS are spiritual opportunities for growth in personal holiness, where the individual enters into a quiet dialogue in prayer with God. A retreat may be as short as a day or two, but can be a week or even longer. The type of retreat, (e.g. directed retreat, private retreat, group preached retreat), determines the specific format of the experience. For more information on types of retreats, please click on the page entitled, "Spiritual Formation", or here.

WORKSHOPS address a specific issue as presented through lectures of a featured speaker or group of speakers. Most often, there is an opportunity for group discussion and individual or group activity in “break out” sessions. Most of the workshops at the Spiritual Life Center are daylong events.

SERIES offerings typically take place on a specific evening of the week. The series may be as few as two evenings, but may last as long as six sessions, depending upon the topic being studied. Unlike retreats, where the primary focus is upon spiritual formation of the individual person, a series focuses more upon the educational element of a particular topic of faith.

DAYS / EVENINGS OF REFLECTION allow the individual to spend quiet time with the Lord at the Spiritual Life Center. A retreat director leads the group through conferences, individual and communal prayer, often with the opportunity provided for the celebration of the Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

SPECIAL EVENTS are those offerings throughout the year that do not fall under any of the other categories listed above. The staff of the Spiritual Life Center seeks to provide a variety of different ways for the pilgrim to come to this holy ground: to rest, to renew your heart, to respond to the Word of God as you walk your personal spiritual journey of faith.

Religious Studies Program

Introduction to Christian Spirituality

“For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy.” —St. Therese of Lisieux

Christian Spirituality is the collected wisdom of the Church and the Saints; teaching us how to pray and grow in holiness. This course will have a twofold goal: helping people in their own journey of prayer and faith, and providing tools to teach others about prayer and the journey of faith.

A variety of methods of prayer and the obstacles to prayer are explored, as well as the traditional stages of spiritual growth as well as what can be helpful in guiding us through these stages of growth. We will look more closely at the fundamental dynamic of our graced movement toward God and our resistance to that growth in our relationship with God.

We will use the Catechism of the Catholic Church as a basic outline, but also go beyond this resource to gain a better understanding of the dynamic of spiritual growth in our Christian lives.

Recommended Course Text:
Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Religious Studies Program

Religious Studies Program graduates play crucial roles in virtually every parish of the diocese by assisting pastors with the mission of passing on the Catholic Faith in RCIA, Religious Education and Confirmation formation classes, Catholic school classrooms and many other settings.

The RSP provides an opportunity for adult Catholics to deepen their understanding and experience of the Catholic faith.  The basic core curriculum courses of the RSP are open to anyone, and in many cases parishes underwrite the cost of tuition.

In the past, four core curriculum courses were offered and studied at the same time, with classes meeting once a month from September through June. Under this new format beginning in September of 2009, one core curriculum course is being offered at a time, with all material for the class covered in two Saturday sessions lasting 5 hours each Saturday.  Once this two-part class is completed, the next core curriculum course begins the following month using the same format.

Four core curriculum courses are being offered in eight month’s time during the 2009-2010 curriculum year.  Those who attend class and complete all coursework over the two-year cycle will earn certification from the diocese.

The only change made to the core curriculum in the new format is the addition of the Catechetics course so that the Religious Studies Program will match the requirements of other religious formation programs in the diocese.

Whether you seek certification or simply want to explore more about the wonderful Catholic Faith, we invite you to partake of some or all of the RSP courses and sincerely hope this resource is of value to you and your parish.

Evening of Reflection for the Laity

“Living and Dying in Christ”

As Lent draws to a close and the Passion approaches, our Lenten prayers intensify.  We begin to reflect upon that which is about to happen in the Scriptures and the Sacred Liturgy—and how it impacts us in our own lives today.

This special “Evening of Reflection” is the ideal preparation for us.  Designed for the layperson who may be seeking a mid-week “break” from their busy schedule, it also offers a place for those seeking inner peace and insights into a closer relationship with Christ.  The pace and atmosphere is quiet, relaxed and contemplative.  We begin at 5:30 p.m. with a nice meal in the Dining Room.  Father Kent Hemberger, Director of the Center, follows dinner with a talk connecting everyday life to our spirituality.  The theme for the March talk is, appropriately, “Dying and Rising in Christ.”

After the talk, attendees are invited to Eucharistic Adoration in the Chapel of Mary, the First Disciple.  The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also available at this time.  The Evening of Reflection concludes with Mass at 8 p.m.

Presenter: The Most Rev. Michael O. Jackels

Date: Friday-Sunday, March 26-28, 2010

Catholic S3 Leadership Training

Leading Like Jesus Encounter

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Few women and men in the business or non-profit world think of Jesus as a leadership teacher and model, or when they do, many suspect his style may be ‘too soft’ to be effective in their own leadership environments. Nothing could be further from the truth. Jesus is the best leadership teacher and role model of all time, and the more we study effective leadership in the real world, the more we appreciate the leadership lessons Jesus provides for us.

At the Leading Like Jesus Encounter, one will discover a leadership approach that calls them to be Servants, Stewards and Shepherds.  Leading Like Jesus engages one’s heart, head, hands and habits in the leadership process.

Although learning to Leading Like Jesus is not something that’s limited to business leaders, Dr. Phelps teaches the same leadership principles in MBA and other secular college classes.  Modern research affirms the effectiveness of his approach to leadership, so the principles are the same.  In Lead Like Jesus, our language is richer and our role model and teacher is the greatest leader of all time.

Learning to lead like Jesus affects all of our relationships — at home, at work, in our parishes and in our civic communities.

Forgiving One Another

A Preached Retreat for Sisters

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times." Matthew  18:21-22

Jesus taught us to Forgive One Another. Forgiveness is the doorway to becoming people of mercy and peace. However, living this command of forgiveness is challenging at times of deep hurt. Yet a lack of forgiveness can become a roadblock in our relationships and steal our peace.

This retreat for Consecrated Religious will look deeply into our struggle to forgive; recognizing forgiveness of deep hurts is a graced process rather than a single act. Forgiveness will be examined as both a process and a grace so that retreatants will be able to move to greater forgiveness in their lives and have a road map for how to approach forgiveness of other hurts in the future.

May we be merciful as God is merciful.
